Tuition fees

The History and Area Studies programme is a three-year, English-language Bachelor’s degree taught at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University, for which the tuition fees are set at 5,000 EUR per year.

The financial procedures and policies are specified on the Faculty website.

Our colleagues from the International Office are ready to assist you if you have any uncertainties or difficulties with making the payment.

Here, we would like to briefly summarise some important information:

  • A student’s obligation to pay the tuition fee for the full academic year arises at the start of that academic year. Therefore, this obligation does not cease upon graduation, nor upon the termination or interruption of studies mid-year.
  • Tuition fees are payable in two instalments – one per semester.
  • Invoices and payment instructions are sent to students by the International Office via email after the start of each semester. Newly admitted students are required to pay the first-semester tuition fee in advance to confirm their interest in enrolling in their chosen programme.
  • Students participating in an Erasmus+ stay abroad are still required to pay tuition fees at Charles University, as they must maintain their student status at Charles University for the entire duration of their Erasmus+ stay.
  • Students who extend their studies may be eligible for a significant tuition fee reduction if they have completed all their study requirements except for the Final State Examination, the thesis defence, the final diploma seminar, and a maximum of one additional course. Funding

Students on our programme can take advantage of several scholarship opportunities offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences to help finance their studies:

“FSV UK SCHOLARS” Programme

This scholarship is intended to support the living costs of students in a demonstrably difficult financial situation. Students need to apply for this scholarship directly to the International Office. The deadline for applications is 30 April.

Merit-Based Scholarship

This scholarship (the Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Achievement) is offered to students with excellent study results each year. It is administered automatically by the Faculty, meaning that you do not need to apply for it. The scholarship is paid out in November or December, retrospectively based on the results of the previous academic year. Consequently, only students in their second and subsequent years of study are eligible. Students with strong academic results have a relatively good chance of securing this Merit-Based Scholarship. (On the other hand, another form of financial support, namely tuition fee reductions for excellent academic results, is only rarely granted at our Institute.)

Other Scholarships (Not Administered by the Faculty)

We encourage all students to search and apply for any external scholarship or funding of their choice. The International Office can provide students with supporting documents if required.

We have good experience with the Visegrad scholarship administered by the International Visegrad Fund for students from the Visegrad group and partner countries.

Another organisation is the Fulbright Commission, which offers scholarships to US students who want to study and conduct research at Czech universities. Advanced graduate and postgraduate students are generally preferred.
