Transnational History (TNH) is our new English-taught two-year master’s degree programme launching in the next academic year. It offers students the opportunity to study transnational processes and phenomena from the 19th century to the present day. It explores key themes such as globalisation, migration, war and its consequences, social and political transformations, and cultural exchange — processes that transcend national, state, and cultural boundaries. Through specific cases, students discover how history shapes our interconnected world.

Transnational History combines the acquisition of subject knowledge with advanced historical research methods. It emphasises the development of critical thinking, textual and source analysis, intercultural competence, and analytical skills. The programme is unique in its integration of historical research with the analysis of contemporary global challenges.

Students have considerable freedom to pursue topics aligned with their individual interests, with opportunities to focus on areas such as Social and Economic Change, Migration and Minorities, or Conflict and Violence. They may also explore how the past is used and interpreted in the present — combining academic insight with practical application. Alongside their degree, students have the option to earn a supplementary Certificate in Digital Humanities by completing courses that develop essential data literacy and digital competencies, increasingly valued across disciplines in both academic research and professional practice.

Graduates of the TNH programme will be well-equipped to pursue careers in international organisations, diplomacy, public administration, NGOs, cultural institutions, academia and research, as well as in multinational companies and the media. They will also be well-prepared for doctoral studies, including the English-taught PhD in Modern History offered by the Institute of International Studies.
