Ian Klinke will give a lecture titled "Geopolitics: What the Right Gets Wrong" on May 14

The Department of German and Austrian Studies, in collaboration with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, invites you to a lecture and discussion with Ian Klinke, Associate Professor of Socio-Economic Geography at the University of Oxford. The lecture Geopolitics: What the Right Gets Wrong, which will take place on Thursday, May 14, at 11:00 a.m. in Room C420 of the Jinonice Campus, will address six myths defining the geopolitical tradition.

Specifically, these are the ideas that: (1) history unfolds on continental chessboards, (2) geography determines the behavior of states, (3) great powers deserve their spheres of influence, (4) states should strive for national self-sufficiency, (5) only the conquest of living space ensures survival, and that (6) geopolitics in itself represents a timeless form of knowledge. The lecture will thus reveal where geopolitics goes wrong, both analytically and morally, and point to different and better ways of thinking about world politics.
