PhD student Ediz Hazir has published a new study entitled Politico-religious Imperialism: The Protectorate of the Roman Catholics and Holy Places in the Ottoman Empire, which examines religious protectorate as a key instrument of European rivalry in the Ottoman Empire. Specifically, the article analyzes how France used religious diplomacy at the end of the 19th century to advance its political, economic, and cultural objectives despite domestic anticlericalism.
