Summer Academic Internship Opportunity in Washington, D.C.
Are you interested in international politics or American politics? Would you like to study at George Mason University in Washington? Would you like to gain practical work experience? Would you like to spend two months living an active life with young people from all over the world?
The Institute of International Studies, in cooperation with the Fund for American Studies (TFAS), offers students in the bachelor's and master's programs in Area Studies a unique opportunity to participate in a summer academic internship in Washington, D.C., from May 30 to July 25, 2026.
What the program includes:
- 250 hours of lectures, visits, discussions, practical experience
- 1-3 credit-eligible courses from George Mason University
- Visits to American institutions such as the White House, Capitol Hill, the Supreme Court, and the Pentagon
- Meetings with representatives of American companies and non-profit organizations
- Guaranteed practical internship at a government or non-governmental organization
- Career opportunity to network with people from around the world
- Visits to cultural and sporting events
- Organized tours of Washington
- Accommodation at George Washington University dormitories in downtown Washington
- Flight ticket from Prague to the US and back
Students pay for themselves:
- Living expenses (the total amount is estimated at CZK 40,000 depending on habits and lifestyle, meals, transportation, and travel plans; some meals are provided as part of the program)
- Program registration fee of up to $40
How to get nominated for the program?

What must the application contain? Four documents::
- CV in English (1 page)
- A sample of any English-language text (essay, seminar paper, blog) of up to 5 pages that you have written on the topic of public policy, history, or international relations
- Answers to the following questions (5 sentences for each is sufficient):
- A/ “Please describe the type of internship that is a good fit for your skills, interests, and experiences. How will this professional experience help you achieve your career goals?”
- B/ “Why are you applying to participate in a comprehensive D.C. program that includes academic coursework, an internship placement, as well as career-building and networking events rather than seeking an internship on your own?”
- C/“Please list any activities, student organizations, or volunteer work that you are involved with on campus or in your community.”
- Transcript of completed courses and grades from previous studies (an informal transcript from SIS is sufficient for now)
