The workshop ‘Global East – Global South. Relations. Memory. Knowledge’ will feature two free, open-to-all lectures

As part of the international workshop Global East – Global South. Relations. Memory. Knowledge, which will take place from 7 to 9 October, there will be two lectures open to all unregistered students and academics.

On Wednesday 7 October at 6.30 pm, Jie-Hyun Lim from Sogang University will give a lecture entitled Uncanny Juxtaposition, Not Comparison: Displacing East & West, and North & South from the Global Easts in room B103b. In it, he will present his ‘uncanny juxtapositions’ as a post-comparative method of historical research. This concept stems from his methodological reflections on how comparative history often reproduces a Eurocentric historical imagination.

The final day of the three-day workshop will feature the lecture Where Relations Take Place: Comparing Contemporary Art without Historical Equivalence, to be delivered by Eunbyeol Lee from Brown Institute for Media Innovation on Friday 9 October at 9.00 am in room C423. She will focus on how to compare contemporary art from different parts of the world without overlooking the distinct historical and social contexts of its creation. She will explore the question of how works can be related to one another when there is no direct influence or shared development between them, and will introduce the concept of historical equivalence as a way of comparing works of art based on the conditions under which they were created.
