AREA STUDIES - Bachelor's degree
First year students
Matěj Brablec
I´m a first-year Area Studies student and one of this year's SIMS newcomers. I like to spend my free time together with friends with a glass of good wine, a game of poker, watching old Hollywood classics, listening to jazz or reading a good book. I´m mainly interested in the territory of Central Europe and the Balkans. At SIMS, I will attend to social events and academic affairs. I´m glad to help everyone and you can certainly contact me with any questions.
Matouš Hojný
I am studying the first year of Territorial Studies. I can talk with you about (almost) anything. Sports (mainly ice hockey), eSports, politics, philosophy, random fun-facts about Czech public transport or why was Legolas from The Lord of the Rings super cool character. If the conversation is with beer, even better. Most of the time I laugh, I can be heard all over Jinonice or I listen to music of almost all genres. You can also meet me in the Sokol costume, but also as I shuffle my shoes at balls. In SIMS, I will mainly take care of PR, because I care about how organizations or people I am interested in are presented, and public image is a very important thing in my opinion.
Matouš Honeš
I'm a first-year student studying Territorial Studies, and I decided to join SIMS to help make student life at our institute more exciting. In SIMS, I'm the treasurer, so if you've got any expenses to get reimbursed, you should come to let me know! I'm really into traveling (I know, it's a bit of a cliché), listening to podcasts, and getting lost in a good book. Also, I'm part of the social events committee, and I'm hoping to meet you at one of our awesome SIMS events soon!
Tereza Ražná
Hi! My name is Terka and I’m a first-year Territorial Studies student. In SIMS I’m a part of a group that prepares for you academic events like debates or talks. My favorite activities are traveling and all sports like skiing, cycling or hiking. I’m also a girl who loves spending time with great people. If you will need some help with anything, let me know. I hope we will see each other soon on some interesting talk
Second year students
Markéta Frýzková
Hi, I'm a 2nd year area studies student and this is my first year at SIMS. I am a passionate fan of sports, traveling, my dog and especially my beloved Prague. Among my great qualities and abilities is brutal honesty, which includes sharing my opinion even though no one has asked and I also excel at delegating my tasks to someone else. I have visited 44 countries and all 6 continents in my life (pst, we will pretend that Antarctica does not exist for a sec). I consider Canada to be my second home, as I lived and studied there. However you can't tell from my English and google translator is still my best friend. I like spending time with people, connecting people and organizing things. That is why I would like to use all my experiences in SIMS where I’ll be part of the social events team!
Tomáš Kout
Hi, I am Tomáš, area studies sophomore and a newbie in SIMS. My hobbies include reading, playing music with my band, listening to music from punk to disco and desperately trying not to get injured doing sports. In SIMS I’ll be helping with organizing events.
Patrik Simota
Hi, my name is Patrik Simota and I'm in my second year on IMS. I joined SIMS because of my interest in student life and the atmosphere within the Student Club. I am particularly interested in the Middle East and Africa (especially local music). I come to SIMS as a newcomer. Outside of school and student life, I am interested in fantasy-themed books and Balkan high-rise architecture. I have a background in brewing beer and several years of experience in a brewery. At the same time, I am a South Bohemian patriot and am trying to find equally minded fellas in Prague.
Adéla Smržová
Hi! My name is Adel and I am a second-year student of Area Studies, sports fan and girl who loves spending time in good company. The impact of sports and cultural factors on international relationships is my biggest interest, same as the following of current global events. I am a sociable person, that is why I always organize or plan some activities. My other hobbies include spending time in nature, attending sports events and traveling, of course. SIMS grew on me last year, so I decided to continue working there again. I am responsible for the Social events section. My other role is participating in the PR section and I also co-organize the skiing event. Happy to help anyone with anything, so don't hesitate to contact me.
Jakub Talaš
I am a first-year Territorial Studies student, for the first time at SIMS. I consider myself a big sports fan, who doesn't just sit and cheer. I'd love to do almost any sport you can think of. In addition, I really like company and that is why the function in SIMS is mainly to organize social events of any type. I also provide further communication between faculties. My other hobbies are also nature, films and books.
Jirka Virág
Hi, my name is Jirka Virág, I am a second year student of Area Studies, and this is my first year in SIMS. Where I’m part of the PR section, which regularly promotes social events, where we can actually meet! I like to read, travel, do all kinds of sports and learn foreign languages. However, I'm not a fan of writing long texts about myself, so I'm looking forward to finally meeting you in real life.
Third year students
Jaroslav Bartůšek
As a third-year student of Area Studies and a new member of SIMS, I would like to help and collaborate in the organization of various academic meetings, lectures or debates. I am also partly responsible for the minutes of the SIMS meetings. I am interested in the history of Western and Central Europe with an emphasis on the United Kingdom and the Habsburg monarchy, European constitutionalism, monarchism, parliamentarism and integration in general. However, as a proud inhabitant of Western Bohemia and the city of Pilsen, I also enjoy regional history.
Pavel Buchta
Hi, my name is Pavel, I'm 22 years old and I'm studying the third year of the Bachelor's degree in Area Studies. I'm mostly interested in anything related to the Western Balkans and I'm going there for Erasmus in February 2024 (if you need anything, feel free to write letters to Sarajevo). Besides studying, I really enjoy cooking, travelling, or playing board games. I also play some computer games and guitar occasionally, but definitely don't ask me to play in front of people after my 12th beer, it will turn out badly. I love meeting new people, preferably over a beer in a nice cosy pub that ideally also has a table football.
This is my second year in SIMS. I mostly enjoy participating in social and academic events here (debates about the Balkans wink wink). I can call anywhere at any time and arrange the space or provide snacks. I am also part of a two-person bulletin board committee and will serve as a phone/email helper and field researcher in Sarajevo during the summer semester. #IMSPROUD
Dino Dražan
I'm a second year Area Studies student. I came to SIMS with a desire to raise the image of our unique institute to a level where we won't have to explain to our family and friends over and over again what Area Studies actually is. Therefore, I decided to join the PR team where we will work on high-quality communication inside and outside the IMS. I also plan to be involved in social events organized by SIMS, where I will occasionally be seen mixing Danza Kuduro with the latest top technos. When I'm not studying one of Jan Kren's books, you'll probably find me editing videos, having pub to club and back to pub tours around Prague or verticutting the lawn.
Agáta Kalkusová
I am a third-year Areas Studies student at IMS and I am an active member of SIMS for the third year. Although I am on Erasmus during the winter semester, I still wanted to get involved in the running of SIMS this time around, even if it's mostly for the summer semester. Not only do I enjoy being part of SIMS, but it also gives me many opportunities to try new things and meet great people every year. During the past years I have been able to participate in the preparation of various social events, cooperation with other FSV clubs and organization of events for international students from Erasmus.
I like to spend my free time with friends and my family, but of course I also love the moments I can spend drawing, reading books with tea in my hand or playing games. I will be happy to help you with any of your problems, so if you need help, don't hesitate to contact me.
Julie Langerová
Third-year Area Studies student, amateur guitar player and lover of reading wonderful books with good coffee. I’m more interested in military conflicts in the 20th century than a specific territory but I will never turn down a debate about 1960s America. This is my second year at SIMS – I’m mainly in charge of photography and I am part of the PR section, but you can contact me with anything. I enjoy traveling, talking over beer, listening to music and admiring Italian gastronomy.
Richard Růžička
Hey! I am a student of 3. year of Area studies and I am 22. I am going back to the Czech Republic in a while from the exchange in Oslo, Norway. Among the things that I am fond of belongs approximately everything that attracts the students from the Institute of International Studies (IMS) and the Faculty of Social Sciences in general: traveling, arts (especially music), and recently also political science which I plan to study as a master degree. And I also love nature. Even more when it is connected with some social event provided by the SIMS. I enjoy helping others, which is not just a hobby but a duty now, when I am a member of the SIMS. :) I have joined the Association of academic issues and social events where I am going to participate in events that will combine entertainment with a reasonable dose of insights and information from the issues which move with the world.
Šimon Vaněk
Hi! I am student of the second year of area studies, however it is the first time I am engaged in SIMS. Besides passionate debates on the topic of bohemia-moravian dialect and differences between biscuit and wafer I like traveling, cooking, history, afternoon naps and procrastinating while reading bizarre discussions in the media. I am interested mainly in the post soviet area and Middle east, nevertheless I do not despise any Balkan music bangers. In SIMS I will work in the academic section and section for social events.
CZECH-GERMAN STUDIES
David Stříbrný
Hi, I'm David and I'm in the second year of Czech-German studies. It's my first year at Sims, I organize social events and try to represent our CNS community. For this task, I train with my friends often and effectively, preferably in a pub where it's cheap. Otherwise, I spend my time working, so I can enjoy all kinds of my bad habits, computer games, preferably with my discord group, and sometimes I even reach for a book, but I've been reading 1984 for half a year now. I like cooking good meals from a student base, growing plants in water and putting together an outfit from the thrift store.
Academically, I'm mainly interested in populism and East Germany, but I lived in West Germany for a long time, so if you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them. :)
AREA STUDIES - Master's degree
Balkan and Central European Studies
Lukáš Filip
I am a third-year master's degree student specializing in Central Europe and the Balkans, so I hope to finish my studies this year, however, I’ve been taking part in the student life organization through SIMS since my first year as a bachelor student. This will be my first year in the position of SIMS chairman, so I hope to put my experiences from the many years spent at IMS to good use. My main points of interest are social events and events outside of Prague, as well as events for international students.
Tomáš Košek
I’m a second year master’s degree student at IMS, a die-hard Comic Sans opponent, and historically one of the smallest East Bohemians to move into Prague. What I lack in height, however, I make up for in heart, which I take advantage of with SIMS, of which I am this year's Vice Chair for Academic Affairs. So you will definitely see me co-organising all sorts of debates, screenings and other shenanigans related to my interest - the Balkans.
Well, what to say about myself? In my spare time (if I have any) I like to travel, read, learn random languages and strum the guitar incredibly badly. I enjoy puffing on my pipe while playing chess, listening to the gramophone, warming myself by the fireplace in an alpaca blanket and contentedly spinning coriander shrimp. But most of all, I love good company, consumption (...add alcohol...), which I'm finding harder and harder to bear. And of course laughter... So I hope we create enough opportunities for it this year :)
Matěj Lucovič
After three years at the Area Studies I’ve finished bachelor, fell in love with IMS and I continue here for my master's degree, besides I spend a lot of time at Hollar with Media studies. I've now started my third term at SIMS, my beloved colleagues have elected me Vice President for PR, I'll try not to let you down. Otherwise, I sometimes help out with organising social events, the more fun, the more... just anything positive. When I'm not studying or working hard, I love to travel anywhere, especially the Balkans. I also play some sports, especially under a high net or with an epée in my hand. Yeah, and I like internet bizarre of all kinds. I'll be glad to see you at events in as many numbers as possible!
Daniel Paál
A citizen of Čelákovice, an “Elbländer”, a Czech of Hungarian origin, a European. After a successful graduation from the bachelor programme Area Studies, he is currently a 2nd-year student of master’s degree with the specialization of the Balkans and Central Europe. Together with the Baltics, these diverse regions are his field of interest and study. Two years ago, he spent a semester at the University of Latvia in Rīga, Latvia in the frame of Erasmus. He has become a member of SIMS for the fifth time. He continues taking minutes of meetings, communicates with other students and no matter how promotes the institute and its student organisation. In his free time, he discovers and travels around Czechia or (particularly Central) Europe, most frequently on his beloved railway. He also watches current events, competitions or sports and plays pubquizes in the evenings.
German and Austrian Studies
Micheala Němcová
Hey! Hey! My name's Michaela and I'm a second year master's student. SIMS has become my heart's affair and has been with me throughout my studies at IIS. I like to get involved in preparing various events, as well as problem solving and improving conditions for students. Studying German-speaking countries, I enjoy keeping up to date with current topics in politics and also understanding East German everyday life piece by piece. I believe that there is such a thing as German cuisine, although they may not have made it to baguettes or risotto (which I love!) despite countless Würst.
When I'm not reading articles for my diploma thesis, I like to bake something or attempt more elaborate recipes - I guess that's where German cuisine comes out. You don't have to persuade me to get out in nature, to play board games with my friends or for a glass of good wine, but I also like to play sports or read. I'm an extrovert, sometimes too loud and mostly smiling, so I'm already looking forward to next year and hope to meet you at events - this year including the IIS Ball! 😊
Russian and East European Studies
Sára Osterrothová
Second year master's student in Russian and Eurasian studies. I graduated from the BA program in Area Studies in 2022, making this my fifth year at IMS overall. This is my second year in SIMS, in which I am involved in the organization of academic debates, PR and internationalization. I like to spend my free time the Czech way, i.e. having a beer with a good group of people. I like going to the theatre, traveling, meeting new people and learning foreign languages (especially those with a completely different script). I spent my Erasmus in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and now I'm trying to figure out how to transplant my Bosnian lifestyle (= no stress) to the Prague environment.
