The Making of a Cultural Leader in Buchenwald Concentration Camp
The Making of a Cultural Leader in Buchenwald Concentration Camp
This project explores the role of “cultural leaders” in the Buchenwald concentration camp. These were prisoners who enabled and shaped artistic activities among inmates. While cultural practices in Nazi camps have been the subject of extensive research, little is known about the individuals who organized and directed cultural life. By analyzing their identities, the paths that led them to positions of influence, and their impact on the camp’s cultural scene, this three-year project aims to reveal the power dynamics within the broader prisoner society.
