Science and Research at the IMS
Within the framework of the FSV research plan and in a number of other Czech and European grants, the Institute's members are developing the theory, methodology and the empirical research in all the major areas of social sciences.
The Institute publishes its own magazine, Studia Territorialia, which is a reviewed academic magazine covering Area Studies.
The students are also involved in the Institute's scientific activities as assistants or researchers, or as the main investigators in the projects of the Charles University Grant Agency (GA UK).

Doc. PhDr. Ondřej Žíla, Ph.D. has published a new article on the complexity of the post-war return to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
A new article by Ondřej Žíla, PhD, examines the complexity of the return of Bosnia and Herzegovina's population to the country's post-war territory. It addresses not only the motivation of returnees, but also how their personal situations intersect with the political, social, and material circumstances changing in connection with the displacement and return of the population. -
PhD student Marina Perglová contributed a chapter to the publication "Ethnicity and Ethnic Minorities in Post-Soviet Eurasia."
In addition to the contribution by doc. Slavomír Horák, the new publication Ethnicity and Ethnic Minorities in Post-Soviet Eurasia also includes a chapter by doctoral student Marina Perglová entitled Kazakhstani Russians in transition: Identity formation in times of uncertainty. -
Doc. PhDr. Slavomír Horák, Ph.D. has published a chapter entitled "Karakalpaks: Entities with and without autonomy" in a new publication
Doc. PhDr. Slavomír Horák, Ph.D. contributed to the newly published book Ethnicity and Ethnic Minorities in Post-Soviet Eurasia with his chapter Karakalpaks: Entities with and without autonomy. In his chapter, he deals with one of the largest ethnic minorities in Uzbekistan, which was the only one that could identify itself as an entity with autonomous status, and focuses on how its identity has evolved over the last 30 years. -

PhD student Ediz Hazir has published a new study entitled Politico-religious Imperialism: The Protectorate of the Roman Catholics and Holy Places in the Ottoman Empire, which examines religious protectorates as a key instrument of European rivalry in the Ottoman Empire. -
Call for abstracts: Panel "Gendered Political Participation in the Climate Crisis - Power, Care, and Resistance"
Linda Coufal from Charles University, chair of the panel Gendered Political Participation in the Climate Crisis: Power, Care, and Resistance, announces a Call for Abstracts. The panel, which will take place as part of the ECPR 2026 conference, examines how gender experiences shape environmental policy and seeks to connect scientific findings, including theoretical backgrounds. -
