Train to Freedom

Train to Freedom

The research project "Train to Freedom", which involves a team of participants from the Federal Republic of Germany and the Czech Republic, deals with the rescue operation in which 1,200 Jews were liberated from the Terezín concentration camp in the final phase of the Second World War. The topic of the project is highly socially relevant in terms of exploring and understanding the strategies involved in the rescue of people persecuted by war, also in light of the current situation in Europe. Within the several segments of the project, consisting of 1) an international workshop in the form of a study tour, 2) a semester-long research seminar, and 3) a traveling exhibition, participants will be able to gain insight into the topic through the subjective stories of survivors, in addition to studying the past in its historical, socio-economic and political context. An important goal of the project is to seek to deepen awareness and broaden knowledge of the Holocaust through the presentation of the project's results to the public. For this purpose, we plan to use both the virtual environment (web interface and social networks of the participating universities) and to realize a travelling exhibition of student work between Prague and Berlin, which will be made available to the general public.
