The article deals with political and social activities of Czech and German school associations in Bohemian lands in the period 1867-1918. On the example of the German association Deutscher Schulverein and the Czech Ústřední Matice Školská it shows the influence of political and social processes (especially democratization processes) on the position and influence of these associations, which had not only considerable pressure potential at local level, they also had close connections to the central politics. The comparison of these associations as national activists within the Czech-German national struggle brings an insight into the extraordinarily wide range of possibilities and contacts used to establish national schools, but also the general differences between the two competing nationalisms.
