Postdoctoral Research Position at the Institute of International Studies - INTERFER Project

The Institute of International Studies announces an open call for a postdoctoral research position within the project INTERFER, focused on foreign interference and national and international reactions to it. 

Position Focus:
The researcher will work within Work Package 3 titled “Foreign Policy Adaptation to the Threat of Foreign Interference in the European Union and NATO.” The position involves independent research under expert supervision, analyzing the approaches of EU and NATO member states to foreign interference, their choice of responses within these organizations, and the theoretical implications of such behavior.

Job Description:

  • Full-time position
  • Start date: 1 July 2025
  • Duration: 42 months
  • Institution: Institute of International Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University, Prague, Czechia
  • Salary: approximately 61,500 CZK/month (around 2,450 EUR), including social and health insurance

Team and Collaboration:
The researcher will work both independently and as part of a team of experts from the Institute of International Studies, Charles University, the Institute of International Relations Prague (IIR), and international partner institutions (CSDS, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Stockholm University). The research will be supervised by Professor Tomáš Weiss and the project’s principal investigator, Dr. Michal Smetana.

Requirements:

  • A doctoral degree in international relations, area studies, European studies, security studies, or related disciplines (must be obtained before the employment start date).
  • Experience with publishing in peer-reviewed journals, focusing on international organizations, foreign and security policies of their member states, or the interaction between these levels.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Designing and implementing partial research projects from start to finish (research design, data collection, publication).
  • Conducting literature reviews on relevant scientific topics.
  • Collecting qualitative and/or quantitative data, including elite interviews.
  • Publishing in high-impact academic journals.
  • Participating in grant applications as either lead researcher or team member.
