PhD Programme in Modern History

The Institute of International Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University is opening admissions to the PhD programme in Modern History, with studies commencing in the academic year 2026/27.

The programme welcomes a broad range of thematic, regional, and methodological approaches in the field of modern and contemporary history of the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries. Comparative and transnational perspectives are encouraged but not required.

The programme is offered in cooperation with the Institute of Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, enabling doctoral students to undertake research stays at the Institute and to consult their projects with leading scholars in the field.

Full-time Study Mode

In the full-time (on-site) mode of study, the Institute offers:

  • two fully funded doctoral positions
  • standard duration of study: 48 months
  • monthly stipend: CZK 25,000 net
  • field of study: modern and contemporary history (19th–21st centuries)
  • application deadline: 30 April 2026

Part-time (Combined) Study Mode

In the part-time (combined) mode of study, the Institute offers:

  • an unlimited number of places; admission depends solely on the quality of the applicant and the proposed research project
  • thematic, regional and methodological focus: modern and contemporary history (19th–21st centuries)
  • application deadline: 30 April 2026
