Funding
No tuition fees for any form of study (from academic year 2026/27).
Full-time students receive a guaranteed doctoral income (~25,000 CZK/month in 2025/26), per university and faculty regulations as well as the Director's Decree on Doctoral Studies at IMS FSV UK no. 9/2022.
Students in the combined form of study do not receive guaranteed income but may be employed in IMS research projects.
External Funding Sources
IMS actively supports students in their applications for project funding in Czechia and abroad. Area Studies students received various types of project or study funding:
Charles University Grant Agency (GA UK)
Charles University Grant Agency (GA UK) offers research grants for individual and collective projects by the university master’s and doctoral students. GA UK is an excellent way to fund your field research and conferencing. Part of the budget can also be paid directly to the principal investigator as a stipend. Centre français de recherche en sciences sociales (CEFRES)
The Prague-based French Research Center in Humanities and Social Sciences (CEFRES) offers one-year scholarships (10,000 CZK per months) for talented and excellent doctoral students in their second and higher years. The support is provided to three doctoral students enrolled in the Czech Academy of Sciences or Charles University within the CEFRES Platform PhD Fellowship scheme. Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund – SYLFF
The Japanese foundation SYLFF’s fellowship programme aims to support education of excellent students with leadership potential. SYLFF provides financial support for doctoral students in social sciences and humanities for maximum two years. The societal impact is an important part of the selection procedure.
