Changes in Russia’s military posture and nuclear doctrine during the war against Ukraine and German Zeitenwende

Dr. Margarete Klein is the Head of the Research Division "Eastern Europe and Eurasia" at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin. Her research focuses on Russian military policy and security issues, and more recently, on Russia’s recruitment strategy during the war.

In her talk, she will analyse the development of Russian military doctrine and strategy, including its strong nuclear component, changes in recruitment policy, and the role of the military in Russian politics and society. Particular attention will be given to Germany’s response to the new dimension of the Russian threat in the context of the so-called Zeitenwende – a historic shift in German defence policy.
