Czech-German studies

General Information

The aim of the Czech-German Studies programme (ČNS) is to provide students with general and specialised knowledge of German-speaking countries and the Central European context. The programme focuses on a range of areas including history, politics, economics, international relations, culture, and linguistics. An integral part of the programme is a one-year stay at the partner University of Regensburg in the second or later year of study, as well as a minimum of three months of professional placement in a German-speaking environment.

All graduates of the Czech-German Studies programme will receive a double degree, enabling them to use the titles Bc. and BA. in accordance with relevant national legislation.

Admission Procedure

The conditions for admission to the bachelor's degree programme in Czech-German Studies are the completion of secondary education with a school-leaving examination and successful passing of the entrance examination.

The selection of candidates is determined firstly by the results of the General Study Aptitude Test (OSP) within the National Comparison Examinations (NSZ), to which applicants apply individually directly through SCIO – their weight in the overall percentile is 50 per cent – and secondly by the results of the integrated test with three parts:

  1. German test (level B2) – maximum 30 points, accounting for 14 per cent of the overall percentile;
  2. Test of German and Czech-German history of the 19th and 20th centuries – maximum 40 points, weight in the overall percentile is 18 per cent;
  3. Test of German and Czech-German realia after 1990 – maximum 40 points, its weight in the overall percentile is 18 per cent.

Tests on German and Czech-German realities cover social, political, economic, and cultural topics.

The entrance examination may be waived at the discretion of the Dean of FSV, subject to the conditions set out in the university's Rules of Admission for applicants. One of the options is successful completion of the final test from preparatory courses for Czech-German studies, with the last admitted being the 10th applicant with the best result (or other applicants with the same score).

Detailed information about the admission process conditions can be found here.

For any questions, you can contact the programme supervisor, Doc PhDr Tomáš Nigrin, PhD.

What to expect after completing your studies?

As graduates of this study programme, you will first continue with a master's degree at a Czech or foreign (most often German) university. For those of you who decide to enter the workforce, a wide range of opportunities awaits in diplomacy and public service, private companies, media, or non-profit organisations. Graduates of Czech-German studies are academically above average due to the combination of studying at the excellent facilities of Charles University and a foreign study internship at a leading Bavarian university in Regensburg. A significant benefit for them is also the knowledge of the German-speaking environment and an excellent ability to communicate in German, which they will acquire during their studies.

Why study Czech-German Studies?

1. Double degree

The Czech-German Studies programme offers a unique opportunity to obtain a Bachelor's degree simultaneously at Charles University and the University of Regensburg. As a result, its graduates can continue their studies in the most prestigious postgraduate programmes in political and social sciences both at home and abroad. Thanks to the German Bachelor's degree, graduates do not need to take additional language exams when pursuing further studies in the Federal Republic of Germany.

2. Studies in German

A significant benefit of this programme is the opportunity to study in German and acquire a high level of German, thanks to the range of courses in Prague, practical training, and a stay at the university in Regensburg. Given that Germany is the Czech Republic's most important trading partner, neighbour, and close ally, this is a significant advantage for employment prospects. Of course, communication and study in English are also essential for us, as they are necessary for an international environment.

3. Lecturers

Lecturers in the Czech-German Studies programme in Prague and Regensburg are top experts in their field. The friendly community of teachers and students is another added value of the programme. A student here is not just an anonymous 'number in the crowd', but a partner for discussion and collaboration.

How will I find employment after my studies?

If you are interested in Germany, the German language, and history, then you are in the right place. We will deepen your knowledge and your interest. You will become a student who can continue their studies anywhere in the world. At the same time, you will build your professional career on the experiences and knowledge gained from your bachelor's studies – thanks to your knowledge, experience, and contacts. When you graduate with us, you will not be short of reasonable job offers. Besides Czech-German companies and institutions, these will include government authorities, and the business sector. It will only depend solely on you which interests you more and which direction you choose after school. With us, studying does not close doors, but creates further opportunities for your personal academic and professional development!

Programme's Structure

The Czech-German Studies programme is an accredited study programme jointly realised by Charles University (UK) and the University of Regensburg (UR). Suppose you fulfil the prescribed study requirements and complete the mandatory foreign study stay at UR. In that case, you will receive, alongside your Bachelor's degree from UK, also a diploma from UR. If you are enrolled at UK FSV, the study regulations of UK FSV entirely apply to you in full. Courses marked in Karolinka with the brackets '(UR) "are offered and completed as part of the study stay at UR.

Your study plan determines the progress of your studies. It consists of various types of courses and is based on earning credits for successful completion. In the Bachelor's programme, you must accumulate at least 180 credits. The structure and number of these credits can be found in the electronic information manual, known as the Karolinka.

The study plan mainly comprises three types of courses:

  1. All compulsory courses (P) in the study plan must all be completed.
  2. Compulsory electives (PV) are subjects from which you choose to meet the required number of credits.
  3. Elective courses (V) are any subjects outside your study plan, for which you can (but do not have to) earn a predetermined number of credits during your studies.
