Lecture by prof. Martin Schulze Wessel - "Imperial Legacies in Russia's War against Ukraine"

Ukraine in a Changing Europe Research Centre & Prague office of the Collegium Carolinum introduce a guest lecture by prof. Martin Schulze Wessel called "Imperial Legacies in Russia's War against Ukraine".

The lecture takes place on Thursday May 18 at 14:00 in the room C321 (Jinonice Campus).

Martin Schulze Wessel is a Professor of East European History at the University of Munich. In his recent book, "The Curse of Empire: Ukraine, Poland, and the Errant Path in Russian History" (C.H.Beck, 2023), he tells the story of Russia, Ukraine, and Poland from a specific perspective. Schulze Wessel highlights the historical and cultural roots of Russia's war against Ukraine in Russian history. The main thesis is: Russia has an unresolved identity problem that is derived from its imperial past. By partitioning Poland and annexing Ukraine, Russian policy created a situation in which its national and imperial identities could no longer be separated. National and imperial identities merged. In the confrontation with the Polish and later the Ukrainian national movement, long-lasting cultural patterns emerged in Russia.

We look forward to seeing you there!
