Diplomacy and Foreign Policy

Leader: Mgr. Eliška Tomalová, Ph.D.

The Research Center for Diplomacy and Foreign Policy (DFP) at the Institute of International Studies at Charles University focuses on the research of topics, actors, and processes that connect diplomacy and foreign policy within the transatlantic space. It develops research and academic debate between the broader expert community and researchers at IMS. The center takes a comprehensive view of foreign policy as a space where both soft and hard power tools intersect and complement each other, using a sectoral analysis of foreign policy and diplomacy. Its researchers follow key diplomatic agendas such as economics, security, culture, and emerging diplomatic topics like cyber diplomacy, environmental, and climate diplomacy. They also examine actors in foreign policy at the level of paradiplomacy, states, and international organizations. The center offers an integration of historical, political science, and sociological perspectives. The common denominator of its activities is the development of theoretical discussions on the future direction of diplomacy and foreign policy research within the IMS academic community, as well as supporting the transfer of scientific knowledge into diplomatic and statecraft practice.
