ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
The Institute of International Studies (hereinafter referred to as IMS) is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University, which was established in 1990 with the aim of responding to the current needs of society.
The IMS itself was founded in 1994 as the youngest of the faculty’s institutes, and its current structure is based on the long-term and purposeful development of the field of Area Studies. Its structure is also influenced by the growing student demand for this field, which, despite its importance for the development of Czech foreign and domestic policy, had been lacking until now.
Graduates of the programs taught at the IMS gain practical education not only in modern history but also in the political, economic, and socio-cultural context of the regions that form the focus of the institute’s research and teaching. They are also well-versed in current social issues, the consequences of recent historical events, and their broader context. At the same time, they are equipped with language skills as well as analytical, interpretive, and presentation skills.
Graduates find employment in a wide range of institutions—both domestic and foreign—that focus on the issues of the relevant territories in their historical and contemporary contexts.
