In 1986 Dmitry graduated Moscow Teachers Training Colledge. Than served as a teacher and ‘The Teachers Gazette’ staff journalist.

In 1988-1992 he worked in the Foundation for Social Inventions – one of the first officially registered Russian NGOs.

In 1992-1993 he was a fellow in The Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies (USA) studying civil society and Saul Alinsky’s theory of people’s leadership and empowerment.

In the 80-90-s Dmitry took part in several anti-totalitarian and anti-militaristic movements and campaigns. In early 1990 he was a member of European Nuclear Disarmament (END) Liaison Committee and took part in several END Conventions.

In 1990-s and early 2000-s Dmitry participated as consultant in several election campaigns and media projects.

In 2002-2008 he served as Editor-in-Chief in ‘So-Obschenie’ Magazine (www.soob.ru) and simultaneously was active in several media and civic agencies.

Since 2014 Dmitry is a freelance author (including ‘XX Century Crocodile Project'). Previously he served as a Head of Editors’ Board in Petropavlovsk Charity Foundation.

His books ‘Aksyonov’, ‘Vassily Aksionov. Sentimental Journey’, ‘John Kennedy. Redheaded Prince of America’, ‘Afgan Stars’, four volumes of the series ‘XX Century Crocodile Project' were issued by the leading Russian publishers.

Dmitry Petrov often delivers lectures and publish texts in Russian and international media. Now he’s working on the book about totalitarian political propaganda and one of its first researchers – Russian psycho-physiologist Dr. Sergey Chakhotin – an author of several books and articles, covering the issue.
