Balkan, Eurasian and Central European Studies (BECES)
Balkan, Eurasian and Central European Studies (BECES) is a two-year master’s degree programme that focuses on the modern history and current developments of Central Europe, the Balkans, and the post-Soviet area (including the Caucasus and Central Asia). Students are allowed to focus on either a single country or a whole region from a thematic angle, such as history, culture, political development, or environmental issues.
Students choose between two regionally focused specialisations:
- Balkan and Central European Studies
- Russian and Eurasian Studies
Both specialisations analyse and integrate the political, societal, economic, and cultural developments in the region, addressing broad thematic issues such as governance, security, nationalism, and ethnopolitical conflicts. They enable students to develop a blend of specialist knowledge in their area, analytical expertise, and language skills.

Special Certificate on Ukraine
The world's view of Ukraine in 2022 has changed entirely in the wake of Russian aggression on its territory, triggering a series of external and internal crises. In the long term, Ukraine has begun to change, emancipating itself while becoming more integrated with the Western community. These realities have led the Institute of International Studies at the Faculty of International Studies of Charles University to utilise its professional capacities and establish an ad hoc certificate in Ukrainian Contemporary History, Politics, and Society.
This certificate demonstrates that its holder is competent in the analysis of Ukraine's contemporary history and its contemporary foreign, domestic political and social developments, including a basic orientation in the language.
